Fanghonghua (red flower from the western regions )is called safulan and also safalong (saffron ). It is produced in the Huihui guo of the western regions and Dashi (Arab lands ). It is named after the safflower by the local people. In the period of the Yuan it was taken as food. Zhanghua’s Buwu zhi (notes on natural science) recorded that Zhang Qian (the first emissary to the western regions in Chinese history ) obtained the seed of the safflower in the western region. Maybe this kind of saffron is slightly different from that one in producing place and living circumstances.[38] Also in volume 18: Maqianzi (nux vomica) originated from Huihuiguo. Now it is widely planted in the west area and Qiongzhou (in Sichuan Province)…It is said by the people of Huihui guo that this herb can cure 120 kinds of diseases. It can be used in various ways according to different symptoms.
