了汉代孔安国[注: 安国市-安国市位于中国河北省中南部。1990年人口36.69万。汉族为主，有回、满、壮、藏、苗、蒙古、土家、白等少数民族 。]的《论语》注释版本进行翻译。遗憾的是，威妥玛因为无暇修改其译文，只很小数量地印制了这个译本。威妥玛印制这几本册子也仅仅是为了确保自己已经完成的《论语》翻译工作不会只留下孤行本。他劝诫那些刚好看到这个译本的读者，不要私下将此译本流通。如果时间和健康允许的话，威妥玛希望能再做一些修订工作，使这个译本获得世人的更广泛关注。
从时间和当时的情况分析，在威妥玛着手翻译《论语》之前，他可能参考的《论语》英译本有Josh-ua Marshman(1809)和David Collie(1828)的两个版本。下面对照一下这三位译者翻译的“学而第一”篇第1章。
子曰：“学而时习之，不亦说乎?有朋自远方来，不亦乐乎?人不知而不愠，不亦君子乎?”
1、Chee says，learn；and continually practice.Is it not delightful? To have a friend come from a dis-tant part，is it not happiness?A man without knowl-edge and(yet)without envy，is it the honourable man?(J.Marshman，1809：40-48)
2、Confucius says，to learn and constanly di-gest，is it not delightful!
Is it not also pleasant to have a friend come from a distance!
Is not he a superior man，who does not feel in-dignant when men are blind to his merits(David Collie，1828：1)
3、It was said by the Teacher：Is not learning，when one has been long enough at it to become a pro-ficient，a pleasure?Is it not delightful when a friend comes from afar [to pursue with(such an)one this learning in which he knows him to be a proficient]?
And is not such [a proficient] a chun—tzu，if he be not disturbed in mind though no one [no such friend] shall have heard [of his proficiency]?(T.F.Wade，1869：1)
很显然，三位译者都注意到《论语》原文中的反问句式。但三人对“人不知，而不愠，不亦君上一页 [1] [2] [3]
