Key words: the Byzantine Empire, the Western Turks, Persia, Silk Road From the first half of the 6th century, the Byzantine Empire, with its eagerness for Chinese silk and its failures of struggles with the Persia for silk on both the Silk Road and the Sea Route, and the Western Turks, with their confrontations with Persia, were drawing near to each other, and came finally into an alliance during 568-576. Their close relations in this period and later facilitated their exchanges of embassies and their cooperation in attacks on Persia, and westward transportation of Chinese silk to Constantinople as well.
