Where hunting remained important,the older division of labor continued, with women responsible for field work. In general,however,Indian patterns contrasted in important ways with the norms of colonizing Europeans,prompting much misunderstanding. When English colonists saw Indian women working in the cornfield, for example, they thought them greatly oppressed. Indians,on the other hand, thought colonial men who labored in the fields were performing “women’s work.”
