ct:What kind of position should TAO Xi-sheng occupy in modern Chinese history? His most important historic contribution lies in starting the semimonthly journal Shi Huo (Food Goods), which results from TAO's academic reflection upon the rencountres of Chinese social history as well as his stand change from his political failure to teaching, and which is also a requirement of the ideology and academic development of his epoch. In other words, the significance lies in its definite proposal of "specification in social historical studies", a pioneer and foundation for carrying profound researches in Chinese social economic history. The success of the magazine benefits from TAO's exploration in combining historical data and theories, which is also a footnote for his status in modern Chinese historiography.
