On She-Tian and Its Related Nationalities in Tang & Song Dynasties
Abstract: The economic center of China had been shifted to the south during Tang & Song Dynasties. Under this circumstance, conflict happened among the nationalities with different agricultural patterns, especially between the nationalities of the slash and burn cultivation and Han nationality of intensive agriculture in South China, which made the so-called She-Tian (slash and burn cultivation) that occurred in ancient documents of Shang and Zhou dynasties. This paper deals with the history of She-Tian and its related nationalities, the main contents include cultivation of She Tian, its geographical distribution, crops, the possible relation of She-Tian people and She nationality of modern times, and the historical trends of She-Tian and its peoples. It is suggested that shift of economic center enhanced the clash and union of the wandering She-Tian people with its neighbors, especially the Han nationality.
