年鉴学派对环境史学的启示，首先在于它重视自然地理因素对历史发展的作用。年鉴学派所以重视这种作用，与法国历史学地理学化的传统有很大关系，而该传统可以“上溯到16世纪法国著名历史理论家波丹(1530—1596年)”，但只是从孟德斯鸠“开始才具有了真正的史学研究形式”①。法国史学界非常善于从法国地理学中汲取理论养分，并受到了具有鲜明特色的法国地理学的影响。
