問題與機會所在。他也指出,做環境史研究有兩個基本的理由:一是有好故事可說,二是瞭解我們如何達到今日的地步有助於更加瞭解我們自己。從實用的角度來說,環境史對於解決今日的環境問題會有助益。[6] 伍斯特與伊懋可都強調,環境史使歷史學成為比從前更為困難的一門學問。為瞭解人類與自然環境間之互動,歷史學者必須嘗試學習自然科學並掌握超出傳統歷史訓練的相關知識。歷史學者需要有系統地結合社會科學與自然科學以便致力於研究環境史。[7] 換言之,環境史必須採取跨領域的(interdisciplinary)研究途徑。面臨著廣袤而重要的工作,多佛斯提醒參與環境史研究的不同領域學者,必須要謙虛與容忍。[8] 由於涵蓋層面廣大,環境史很可能成為領導跨領域研究的實驗室。[9]
