自從1970年代以來，環境史逐漸形成一個研究領域。至於更早的淵源，近年也有學者加以追溯。在此可舉三個例子。美國學者克羅斯比(Alfred W. Crosby)認為，美國環境史或可上溯至1926年出版的一本有關地力枯竭的書(Odell Craven, Soil Exhaustion as a Factor in the Agricultural History of Virginia and Maryland, 1660-1860)，1931年出版的有關大邊疆的書(Walter Prescott Webb, Great Frontier)，以及1947年出版的有關北美草原的書(James C.
